World Test Championship 2025-27: How Does India Stack Up After Australia's Victory?

The World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle has commenced with compelling contests, as three Test series have already begun to shape the leaderboard. While Australia and England have quickly ascended to the top positions, India and West Indies are now looking to recover lost ground.

Australia and England currently hold the first and second positions in the WTC table, both boasting a perfect 100 points percentage after securing victories in their opening matches.

Three teams, including reigning champions South Africa, New Zealand, and Pakistan, are yet to commence their WTC campaigns in this cycle.

India's first match did not unfold as expected, despite showing promise at Headingley. The team had five centurions during the match but ultimately faced defeat as England successfully chased their target, gaining a 1-0 advantage in the five-Test Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

England successfully pursued a target of 371, bolstered by a strong opening partnership between Ben Duckett (149) and Zak Crawley, while Joe Root and debutant Jamie Smith guided their team to victory with an unbroken partnership. Shubman Gill’s team faced setbacks due to a middle-order collapse and costly dropped catches.

Following the match, Gill admitted that India had opportunities but failed to capitalize on them. He mentioned that India aimed for a more substantial lead, but insufficient runs from the lower order impacted their plans.

India is now focusing on the second Test at Edgbaston, seeking a swift rebound to keep their WTC campaign competitive. Currently, they are positioned near the bottom of the table, alongside West Indies.

The WTC cycle commenced with Sri Lanka’s tour of Bangladesh on June 17 and will continue until the final in 2027.
