NEW DELHI – Renowned Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu reveals the relentless mental dedication required for elite performance, stating that the demands of training and maintaining her weight are ever-present, even during family time. The silver medalist in the 49kg category at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics is currently focused on preparing for the upcoming Commonwealth Championships.

"We do get some rest, especially after major events like the Asian Games or Olympics. I take that time to recover, but I quickly return to training," Chanu shared on the "Game On" podcast. "Spending quality time with family is crucial, particularly after dedicating so much time to rigorous training, as it allows for necessary relaxation."

Chanu emphasized the constant balancing act between personal life and athletic commitments. "That period of rest is beneficial, but the focus quickly shifts back to training. The Commonwealth Championships are on the horizon, serving as a qualifier for the Commonwealth Games. Our entire preparation is centered around that competition."

The sacrifices involved in pursuing excellence were also highlighted. "We don't often get to fully enjoy traveling. While I occasionally go out, it's difficult to relax and enjoy time with my family the way I'd like because we have to return to training," Chanu explained. "We've already invested so much time, so we have to prioritize recovery and maintenance... These thoughts are always in my mind. I constantly think about when to resume training and whether I'll be able to perform at my previous level."

The mental discipline extends even to diet. "Honestly, we're always mindful of training, even while eating! We consider the impact of every food choice. Will it lead to weight gain? Because of this, we often can’t indulge in the foods we crave."

Chanu admitted her love for junk food. "I love junk food, especially pizza! It's widely known. But I still have to resist it. Even during off-season, I crave it, but I stop myself and think, 'How will this affect tomorrow's training?' I have to maintain my weight, ideally around 50 kg. It's incredibly challenging to train and maintain that weight. So, even when I desire something, I have to remind myself to prioritize the competition."

Beyond her Olympic silver medal, Mirabai Chanu boasts an impressive collection of accolades, including a gold and silver medal at the World Championships, two golds and a silver at the Commonwealth Games, and a bronze at the Asian Championships.
